What Types of Therapies Are Available for Alcoholism?

There are a range of therapies available to treat alcoholism. This blog explores some of the different therapy methods which are effective in treating alcoholism.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Sometimes referred to as CBT, this form of therapy has been proven to alleviate the burdens of alcoholism. CBT focuses on turning negative thoughts into positive ones. CBT sessions tend to be solution-orientated, focusing on what action can be taken to target negative thoughts and beliefs. They can also construct strategies on how to stop drinking alcohol. CBT can be extremely effective after just a few sessions in rewiring the brain.

Talking Therapy

In cases of alcoholism, a psychologist could assist a patient in better understanding and managing their cravings. This helps the patient to stay motivated in achieving their goal of becoming sober. Talking therapy might last for a few weeks or go on for many months. The psychologist will develop a trusting relationship with the patient to help them feel comfortable to open up.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Sometimes referred to as DBT, this form of therapy is evidence-based. The method involves teaching the patient to live in the present moment as opposed to dwelling on the past. This helps the patient to better manage their emotions, communicate effectively and limit their distress. The aim of DBT is to help the patient find an emotional balance whilst embracing positive change. Studies have found that DBT has been effective in treating those with alcoholism.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing is another form of therapy available to those struggling with alcoholism. It has been found to be effective in reducing substance use. This method of therapy involves encouraging the patient to examine the negative consequences of alcohol use.
